If you’re a mother, the second Sunday in May holds a lot of meaning; if you’re a restaurateur, it may be a doubly meaningful day.
That’s because the second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day (May 11th, this year). According to the National Restaurant Association, Mother’s Day is the biggest day of dining out of the entire year. Add to that the fact that US taxpayers will soon be receiving rebate checks (with the added “economic stimulus” cash), and restaurants nationwide may finally get a bit of relief from what has been a tough year so far. CNNMoney’s recent article highlights this phenomenon of Mother’s Day dining and asks experts how best to attract customers in today’s economic climate. Several restaurant operators interviewed suggest expanding the appetizer menus and offering smaller portions with value pricing.
If you are planning to run a Mother’s Day special, now is the time to start planning; with just one month until the big day, there’s no time to waste. (And don’t be shy—last year, Mother’s Day netted restaurants $3 billion!)
