While many cities are looking at fast food restaurants as a source of the obesity problem in this country, some experts are looking beyond the arches and the brightly colored doors to the plates that are being put on the table. This article says that people are starting to realize that portion sizes in this country are too big. The fact that some restaurants are having to list calorie counts because of legislation in some places is only bringing portion sizes into the mainstream view.
People have known for a while now that portion sizes are big and nutritionists and doctors have been urging people for a few years now to eat less, split meals, or portion part of the meal to take home as leftovers. But now that calories are being revealed, the actual damage of these giant portion sizes are being realized. People have discovered that they have been consuming hundreds, in some cases even thousands, of calories in one meal by simply eating what is put in front of them.
However, now that people are realizing how much they are really eating with these giant portion sizes change is on the horizon. Many restaurants are starting to offer smaller portions of items (although the often use this as an excuse to eat dessert or have some drinks) and restaurants usually have no problem bringing out to go boxes so people can put part of their meal away before they even start eating. These changes, coupled with the fact that people are now starting to realize how many calories they are really consuming, will hopefully bring changes to how people eat and how restaurants serve their food.
