Move over facebook (as a verb), w00t, and quixotic because edamame, pescatarian, and soju are moving into the Merriam-Webster Dictionary this year. Those first three words (whose meanings can be found here) were among the terms added to the dictionary last year. This year’s list includes many food-related terms (the three already mentioned) and phytonutrient and prosecco. This news has made many foodies very happy (including the folks at Serious Eats).
While soju and prosecco are possibly not already on your menu and behind your bar (the first is a vodka the second is a sparkling wine) they are easy additions to your drink menu.
Phytonutrients are already found in the vegetables that you already have in your restaurant and you already cater to pescatarians with vegetarian and fish-based items on your menu.
The hardest term on this list of exciting new terms to figure out how to use is probably edamame. It is probably not on your menu and not something you are familiar with (I know I’m not). But with some research and some recipe sampling you can add edamame to your menu. A quick search of the web site allrecipes.com reveals these tasty sounding items.
Adding these items to your menu (even for a short amount of time) can provide some great marketing opportunities for your business. You can play with the fact that these are the new, exciting terms for the year and announce your items as the new, exciting items of the year (if you want to see how huge these words can get, just look back to 2006 and Stephen Colbert’s truthiness entry).
