Although stay-at-home moms might be reigning in the family's restaurant budget (according to the Tuscon Citizen), they may also be a source of a great boost to restaurants next month. First, the economic stimulus plan... According to the IRS:
"Starting in May, the Treasury will begin sending economic stimulus payments to more than 130 million households... Eligible people will receive up to $600 ($1,200 for married couples), and parents will receive an additional $300 for each eligible child younger than 17."
That extra cash may well do what it was intended to--get consumers out there spending money, getting the sluggish economy chugging again.
And second, Mother's Day is coming up on May 11th. This holiday (as I've noted before) is the foodservice industry's busiest day of the year. With any luck, the stimulus checks will appear in American mailboxes in time to make this Mother's Day one of the best for restaurants in recent years.
