Some not-so-great news to lead you into your Fourth of July Weekend. The government is now looking at fresh salsa as the possible cause of the salmonella outbreak. The Federal Government asked state governments on Wednesday to start checking out ingredients that are in typical salsa recipes: tomatoes, onions, jalapeños, garlic, and cilantro. The investigation does not include commercial salsa in grocery store, only those made with fresh ingredients in homes and restaurants.
The government has not issued any new warnings for items to avoid, but says the current warnings about certain types of tomatoes is still in effect. There is some speculation hat if tomatoes end up being cleared in the outbreak growers may ask the government to reimburse them the profits they lost because of the claims. However, that remains to be seen and supporters of the government say they should not be blamed for naming tomatoes before they were completely sure they were the cause.
With that, have a happy and safe Fourth of July. And wash your produce carefully.
